VICTORY BAND
Phil Sutton, guitar and vocals
with Max Link, drums My music days really started at a camp that I was working at. At Camp we were forced to go on stage and lead Campfire songs and skits. Usually someone had a guitar and that was always amazing to sing along with. Guitars were often left out and people were always plucking around. So, I would grab a guitar when one was available and start to play one one my favorite songs, Flicker. I did have a little experience from High School trying to play some power chords but not much else. One of the guys, Grizzly, showed me the chords, and I practiced for months. After Finally getting down Flicker, I had to buy a guitar of my own. I went to the local music shop and bought a $250 Alvarez acoustic guitar, and 20 years later I still play it today!
The next song I remember working on was "Come Now is the Time to Worship." That song took only a few weeks and after that the songs just started piling up. If you learn one there are a hundred more like it. So pick up an instrument and play! I started playing in church with the worship team. That eventually turned into leading worship. I recently met a couple guys that wanted to start a band so I started writing some songs. I already had a few bits and pieces from along the way. I also decided early on to only play The Lords Music. Well except for some fun campfire songs. I didn't want to mix Praise to the Lord with praise to the world. Like these verses say, James 3:11-12 11 Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? 12 My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water. |
I feel like music has the purpose to Praise God. I want to offer up pure offerings to God. Most of the music we hear on the radio today originated from songs of praise. Currently I have a small group of artists working together, playing around and helping each other out. So, I'm writing songs, leading worship and playing with other like minded musicians. Waiting to see what God has next! |
